University of Vermont Athletic Hall of Fame
Walter M. Sargent 1931 - Baseball, Basketball, Tennis
A 1978 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, Wally Sargent, a three-year letterman in basketball, baseball and tennis, was one of the standout athletes at Vermont in the late 20's and early 30's.
In baseball, Wally was an imposing 6'6" on the mound and used this size to good advantage. At one point during the 1930 and 1931 seasons, he had compiled a string of 44 consecutive scoreless innings, a monumental feat in any era. He continued playing baseball for two years following graduation in the respected Canadian Provincial League.
Although baseball was the sport in which he excelled, he was also a top-notch basketball player, captaining the team his senior year, and a better-than-average tennis player.
Always active on campus, he served on the Student Senate, Student Faculty Council, Junior Week Committee and was a member of the Gold Key, Key and Serpent and Boulder Clubs, honorary academic organizations. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity as an undergraduate and has since served as chairman of the Alumni Fund for the Class of 1931.
He spent four years in the United States Navy following graduation and has served on the Centennial Committee at UVM.
