Edward W. Castle 1974 - Hockey
A major contributor during UVM's most prolific early hockey seasons, Ted Castle was rewarded with All-America status following his senior season of 1973-74. Inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 1985, Castle combined a rare blend of physical play an innate scoring ability making his mark as much in the corners as in front of the net. Despite his all-out aggressiveness, Castle accumulated a mere 34 minutes in penalties over his 87-game career. In only three years of varsity play, Castle piled up 71 goals and 75 assists for 146 points, graduating behind Pat Wright (61-91-152) as the second all-time scorer in UVM annals. Vermont's overall record during Castle's years was 70-18-2 (.795) and included two ECAC Division II championships.
As a senior he captained the Catamounts to a 28-5 overall record (18-1 in Division II) and the second ECAC Division II titles. That year UVM was invited to play in the National Invitation Hockey Tournament in Duluth, Minn. The team's 28 wins were a school-record and at the time were the most wins ever in one season by any team in New England. Also that year, Castle was the recipient of UVM's Semans Trophy, awarded annually "to the male and female members of the senior class who are outstanding in the respect and regard of their fellow students for leadership, loyalty and service to the university, and for active participation in athletics." He was also a member of the Boulder Honor Society.
Castle served at UVM as an assistant coach in 1976-77 and from 1980 to 1984 and was also an assistant at the University of Maine for two seasons. He also played and coached professionally in Italy and Sweden. Also an accomplishment sailor, Castle was a finalist in the Olympic sailing trials in 1976, and has directed the junior and adult sailing programs in his hometown of Rochester, N.Y.
