Thomas Cullity 1980 - Hockey
While Louis Cote was credited with making the power play go - setting up one of the most feared power plays in the ECAC - it was center Tom Cullity, a 1990 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, who usually finished it off tallying 38 power-play goals in his two seasons at UVM (1978-1980). Cullity, who transferred to UVM after the University of Pennslyvania dropped hockey following his sophomore season, scored 19 power play goals in each of his two seasons at Vermont, still a record by a Catamount player. In one game at Yale during the 1978-79 campaign, he tallied four power-play goals.
At UVM, Cullity had impressive numbers in his two seasons: 22 goals and 18 assists in 1978-79, and 33 goals and 29 assists his senior year. Combining his Penn statistics, his career scoring totals are 84-77-161 going 55-41-96 at Vermont. He was named UVM's Most Valuable Player following the 1979-80 season when the Catamounts won the ECAC West regular season title.
A native of Charlestown, Mass, Cullity had tryouts with the Boston Bruins and Winnipeg Jets after graduating from UVM. He joined the business world after leaving pro hockey and was active in youth sports for many years. While as a pee-wee hockey coach in Tewksbury, Mass., his team won a USA Hockey National Championship. His son, Patrick '10, followed him to UVM and became a defenseman on the Catamount hockey team starting with the 2006-07 season.
