Margaret 'Peggy' Nutt Mitchell 1969 - Field Hockey, Skiing
A former national whitewater kayaking champion and an outstanding member of the women's ski team at UVM in the late 60's, Peggy Nutt Mitchell was the Catamounts captain and number-one alpine skier for three years (1967-69). A 1979 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, she participated in 14 carnivals and finished third or better in 19 of the 27 races in which she competed. Nutt Mitchell was also commended for her starting position on the women's field hockey team.
In light of all her outstanding accomplishments it was her whitewater kayaking, a relatively unknown sport that is usually only covered every four years when the Olympic games roll around, that caught attention. Nutt Mitchell became interested in whitewater racing and in two years was named the U.S. national champion (1970-1971). She also became the British National champion in 1973 and 1974. Nutt Mitchell continued her competition in kayaking, winning the gold championships at Maurovo, Yugoslavia in 1975.
However her biggest thrill was having the pleasure of coaching the United States women's team as they won the gold medal at the World Championships at Jonquiere, Quebec. "It was a thrill to watch them reach the top in the world competition, particularly since it was the sport I specialize in."
