Philip J. Chesarone 1943 - Football, Track and Field
Phil Chesarone was a three-letterman in both football and track at Vermont in the early 1940s. Chesarone, inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 1982, was an outstanding example of the gritty footballer of his era, playing every minute of every game in his junior and senior years earning All-State honors in both of those seasons. As a senior in 1942 he co-captained the squad to the Vermont state championship and was named All-America (honorabe mention) by Sports Illustrated. Chesarone received offers from four professional football teams, including the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles, following his graduation from UVM in 1943. A standout in track as well, Chesarone was the Vermont state champion in the hammer throw as a senior and helped his team to the state championship.
An all-around athlete, Chesarone also played on Vermont's freshmen basketball squad in 1939-40 and participated in intrafraternity basketball and baseball throughout his undergraduate years. He was also actively involved in many campus activities, including the Interfraternity Council. Chesarone married the former Janet Sue Foote and they are the parents of five children.
