Sturla Hagen 1989 - Skiing

A four-time All-American and a skier Chip LaCasse called "the heart and soul of our team," Sturla Hagen, a 2000 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, was an integral part of Vermont's two NCAA ski titles in 1989 and 1990. Hagen gained All-America honors in each of his four years at Vermont and was part of a dominant nordic team that included Hall of Famers Joe Galanes, Bruce Likly and Todd Boonstra and standouts Tim Miller and Paul Hansen.

As a senior, Hagen helped Vermont to an NCAA title, finishing third in the 10-K classical race (29:44.70). In the Eastern Championships, Hagen teamed with Miller and Galanes to win the 3-by-7.5-K relay event. In 1989, Hagen finished eighth in the 10-K classical race at the NCAA Championships (30:58.4) and was 11th in the 20-K freestyle event (58:45.9) Two weeks earlier at the EISA Championships, he was fifth in the 15-K (43:35.5) behind teammates Galanes and Aspen Thorsby, and teamed with Thorsby and Galanes to win the relay again.

As a sophomore, Hagen was ninth in the 15-K race (36:22.9) and the relay team of Likly, Snore Krogstad and Hagen finished fifth as the Catamounts finished second to Utah. Hagen was All-East in 1988 as well, posting the top Vermont finish in the 15-K race (second, 36:28.7) and combining with Likly and Sten Seaman to win the 3-by-5-K relay.

In 1987, Hagen's freshman year, he was fifth in the NCAA 15-K race (37:24.9). He was also on the relay team with Likly and Galanes that finished fourth. In the EISA 15-K race, Hagen finished fifth (38:35.6) behind teammates Likly and Galanes.
