David Eddy 1983 - Soccer

One of the top defenders in the mid-1980s for the UVM men's soccer team and a 1995 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, David Eddy was also a top student-athlete during his career. A member of the Boulder Society, Eddy received the Converse Award from the UVM School of Business, given annually to the student who hest displays the qualities of scholarship, leadership and service.

Captain of the 1982 team that went 9-8-1, Eddy was the team's Most Valuable Player in 1980. He also was selected to play in two New England Intercollegiate Soccer League All-Star games, and was named first team All-New England in 1982. Perhaps the best indication of the type of player Eddy was at UVM can be found in the listing of past winners of the coveted Hal Greig Award. The Hal Greig Award is presented annually to the men's soccer player, who, in the opinion of his teammates, has done the most for the program through his desire, hustle and love of the game. In the first 30 years the award was given out, Eddy is the only Catamount to win the award three times, in 1980, 1981 and 1982.

As a back, Eddy tallied 10 assists in his last two seasons (0-4-4 in 1981 and 1-6-8 in 1982). His six assists as a senior tied him with a number of players as the sixth-highest single-season total in UVM history.

Vermont coach Ron McEachen, who never coached Eddy but coached many Middlebury teams that played Vermont during Eddy's career, remembers the standout Catamount well. "David Eddy was the engine that ran the train," McEachen said. "During the four years he played while I was at Middlebury, he was without question the best and most effective player for Vermont. He was probably the most dominant player I saw at Vermont during my 11 years at Middlebury."
