John Teague 1982 - Skiing

A 1998 UVM Hall of Fame inductee who was a first-team All-American skier for three straight years, John Teague was one of the finest alpine skiers in Vermont history. The NCAA individual champion in the giant slalom in 1980, when the Catamounts won their first-ever NCAA team title, he was second in the country in the GS in 1979 and third in 1981. Over his four years, Teague was a key member of Vermont ski teams that never lost a carnival.

A native of Norwich, Vt., Teague prepped at the Burke Mountain Academy and was a member of the U.S. Ski Team from 1976 through 1978, In 1980, the year he won the NCAA giant slalom title, he was unbeaten at that event the entire season becoming the first skier in NCAA history to do so. During that run, Teague beat many of the 1980 Olympians who returned from Lake Placid to ski at the collegiate level. For 1981 and 1982, Teague was captain of the team and both seasons, the Catamounts finished second at the NCAAs.

While he was an undergrad at UVM he was a student member of the Athletic Council in 1981 and was elected to the Boulder Society in 1980.

After UVM, Teague raced professionally for three years on the North American Pro Tour, posting several top-four performances.

Following his racing career, Teague became the coach of the Mt. Mansfield Ski Club before moving back to his alma mater. He was the head alpine coach at UVM from 1988 to 1997 helping lead the Catamounts to four NCAA team championships. His men and women alpine skiers, led by three-time NCAA champion Einar Bohmer, won nine individual NCAA titles.

"John is one of the greatest alpine racers we have ever had at UVM," adds Director of Skiing Chip LaCasse. "And as a coach, he was instrumental in maintaining our great ski tradition."

Also an avid sailor, he was the East Coast J-24 champion three times and in 1982, he was second in the North American Championships.
