J. Scott Montgomery 1997 - Lacrosse

One of the most dominant men's lacrosse players ever to play at UVM, J. Scott Montgomery's records have not even been approached in the years since he graduated. It seems quite appropriate, then, that he became the first men's lacrosse player to enter the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1997.

Is is not a coincidence that the four years that Montgomery played here - 1983 to 1986 - were among the best years ever in men's lacrosse at the University of Vermont. As a freshman, Montgomery's team was 10-3. As a sophomore, the Catamounts were 10-4. As a junior, 9-4. And as a senior, a school-record 11 wins and only three losses.

Montgomery's records are impressive and, at least so far, out of reach.
  • He is the school's all-time leading scorer with 283 points. Only one other player, Craig Mygatt, has scored more than 200 as of 2007.
  • He is the school's all-time assist leader with 205. The next closest is Mygatt. He finished with 93.
  • He owns the top three single-season assist records, and four of the top six. As a sophomore, he assisted on a school-record 68 goals. That year, he also led the nation in assists. As a senior, he added 61 assists. As a junior, he assisted on 50 goals. And his freshman year, he had 29 assists. To put this in perspective, only two players - Gordon Allen and Jamie Kirk - have recorded 29 or more assists since 1990.
  • He owns the top three single-season point records. In 1986, Scott scored 85 points (24 goals, 61 assists). In 1984, he added 82 points (17G, 65A). In 1985, he scored 75 points (25G, 50A).
Also, two of the top three winning streaks of all-time came when Montgomery was in the Green and Gold. He was named MVP of the team in 1986.

A member of the UVM Boulder Society for his campus leadership and academic excellence, Montgomery has kept active in club lacrosse across the country. He played for the Philadelphia Lacrosse Club for six years, and was MVP of the Brine tournament in Lake Tahoe, CA in 1995. He also made the All-Western States All-tournament team in 1996, and was on the winning team in the highly competitive Stowe Invitational in 1992.

Montgomery lives in San Francisco, where he is a vice president with General Reinsurance Coporation.
