University of Vermont Athletic Hall of Fame
Lee J. Roy 1968 - Hockey
A 1990 UVM Hall of Fame inductee and one of the first star hockey players at the Vermont, Lee Roy was the school's first player to tally 100 career points and graduated as UVM's all-time leading scorer with 116. Currently 22nd on UVM's scoring list with 59 goals and 56 assists in only 67 games, he averaged 1.72 points per game, third-best in Catamount hockey history.
Vermont's MVP in 1966, Roy was All-State for three seasons (1966-68) and MVP in the state following the 1967-68 season. In 1965-66, Roy set a record for most goals (21) in one season, a record held up until George Minasky ('71), a 1984 UVM Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, scored 24 goals in the 1968-69 season. Roy scored four goals in a game against Connecticut in 1965 and was named the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Athlete of the Month in December 1965, when he tallied ten goals and four assists in but six games.
One of his highlights at UVM was his overtime goal, which upset Division I New Hampshire, 3-2, on Feb. 10, 1966. It was UVM's fist win over the Wildcats after eight straight loses when the series began in 1963. Roy and two other UVM Hall of Famers, Jack Semler ('68) and Chip Uihlein ('67), were the mainstays of the Jim Cross-coached teams that soon would become a Division II power. Although the trio never played on an ECAC Championship squad, the three were instrumental in building the foundation of what would become one of the best hockey programs in the nation.
Roy has been involved with numerous hockey schools and associations, including the Bob McCammon-Maine Mariner Hockey Camp, the Greater Portland Youth Hockey Association, the New England Power Skating School and was the founder - and first head coach - of the University of Southern Maine varsity team in 1972. His son Travis went on to play hockey at Boston University.
