Dr. Clifford B. Harwood 1934 - Track and Field
One of the top distance runners in UVM history, Clifford Harwood, inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 1992, went on to distinguish himself in the field of medicine. His athletic achievements have not gone unnoticed since his graduation from UVM's undergraduate college in 1934 and he now takes his place among the best athletes in the history of the Green and Gold.
As an undergraduate, he was the school's top two-miler and was the first UVM runner to break the ten-minute barrier for the two-mile run in May of his senior year. His coach was A.T "Archie" Post '27, elected to UVM's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1970. One of the highlights of Dr. Harwood's athletic days was his fifth-place finish at the Canadian National Indoor Championships in Montreal in 1935.
Dr. Harwood, who also served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1984-86, practiced medicine for 46 years after graduating from UVM's Medical School in 1937. He served as President of the Vermont State Medical Society in 1964, the same year he was the principal fundraiser of two million dollars from the Given Foundation for UVM's medical school.
"Dr. Harwood is a quiet, thoughtful man who has never sought favors of any kind and his work in medicine and as an undergraduate athlete speaks volumes of his character," said former UVM team physician and himself a 1983 UVM Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Richard W. Amidon.
