Mike Mason 1990 - Soccer, Track
A top soccer forward who also was a quality sprinter on the Catamount track team, Mike Mason, a 2006 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, graduated second on the career men's soccer scoring list behind fellow Hall of Famer John Koerner '78.
In four seasons on the soccer pitch, Mason tallied 30 goals (also second all-time) and had 15 assists (fourth all-time) for 75 points. He had a share of the team's scoring lead for three straight seasons and the Cats in this stretch went 50-18-11 capped off by a trip to the NCAA Regional Final in 1989.
As a freshman in soccer he tallied two goals- both game winners- and had two assists. In the spring on the track, Mason was the top UVM 400-meter sprinter. He won the Vermont state meet, was second in the Tri-State meet at Dartmouth and also placed fourth in both the New England and Eastern Championships. He also ran a leg in the 4 x 400 relay team that set a new school record of 3:20.40.
He led the soccer team in scoring as a sophomore netting eight goals with four assists. In the midst of a six-game winning streak, he scored three straight game winners. In track he added the 200 meters along with the 400 and was the team's top finisher in both events.
Mason again led the soccer team in scoring his final two seasons with 10 goals and five assists as a junior, and 10 goals and four assists as a senior- each year he was fifth in the America East in scoring. In 1989 en route to the Cats' 19-3-1 season and the America East title, Mason had four game-winning goals and was a member of the America East All-Championship team.
He finished his track career with two outstanding seasons. As a junior in 1989 he posted his best time in the 400 at 49.39, and again was on a record setting 4 x400 relay as the Catamounts pulled off a big win with the men's team title in the Eastern's. In his senior year he was the top 400 runner again and set a Vermont state meet record in the javelin with a toss of 186' 3".
