R. Russell Mahoney 1951 - Cross Country, Track and Field
One of the fastest middle distance runners in UVM history and a 1980 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Russ Mahoney's 48.8 in the 440 set in 1950 has stood for more than 50 years at Vermont.
"One of the finest runners UVM ever had," claims Archie Post, a former Vermont cross country and track and field coach. "He was the best middle distance runner ever at Vermont."
Mahoney also ran a 1:56.5 in the 880 and was an outstanding cross-country runner for the Catamounts. This two-sport athlete was the Yankee Conference champion in both the 440 and the 880 and the only double-event winner in 1949 and 1950.
A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Mahoney was also president of his class. Before enrolling at UVM, he was in the submarine service for four years. He also received his M.B.A. from the University of New Haven Graduate School of Business Administration in June, 1979.
