Dr. Lyman Allen 1893 - Baseball, Football, Track and Field
Few Vermont athletes have done so well on the athletic field and the classroom as did the late Dr. Lyman Allen, baseball captain for four consecutive seasons from 1890 to 1893, a Phi Beta Kappa electee in 1893, and finally, inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 1971.
A member of Vermont's medical faculty for 46 years, this scholar-athlete helped lead the UVM baseball team, then considered one of the finest in the country, to the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Dr, Allen also was a standout football and track and field performer during his undergraduate years at Vermont, holding Vermont's long jump record for over 20 years.
Dr. Allen, one of the founders of the American College of Surgeons, was a member of the University of Vermont Board of Trustees from 1944-50, and received and Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from UVM in 1953. During his collegiate days, he was also a member of the Glee Club, Sigma Phi fraternity, Ethan Allen Club, Nu Sigma Nu (medical fraternity) and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
