University of Vermont Athletic Hall of Fame
Richard Healy 1941 - Baseball, Basketball
Earning six letters in basketball and hockey, Dick "Ace" Healy, inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 1993, was one of the top two-sport athletes at Vermont.
An outstanding shooting guard, he was named to the All-Vermont College Basketball team for two consecutive years. In basketball, Healy - along with UVM Athletic Hall of Fame inductees Frankie Taylor '41 and Don Maley '41 - helped lead UVM to three consecutive State Championship titles.
He might have even been a better baseball player. A slick-fielding shortstop for the Larry Gardner-coached Catamounts, Healy also hit .310 and was one of the team leaders in home runs and RBIs.
Healy wasn't just an athlete, involving himself with many campus groups and holding membership in Gold Key, Key and Serpent and Boulder Society. A distinguished high school and college basketball official for more than 40 years, Healy was recently elected a Life Member of the Board of Basketball Officials in Massachusetts for his 46 years of service. Healy is still a member of the "stake crew" at home football games at Westboro (Mass.) High School, doing this for more than 20 years.
Healy is now a senior consultant with Kevin F. Donoghue & Associates in Boston, specializing in claims. He is a former president of the Boston Claims Managers Council and former Chairman of the Boston Inter-Company Arbitration Committee. Healy worked at Liberty Mutual in Boston for 42 years. He and his wife, Marjorie Witham Healy '43, are still very active in UVM's Alumni Council, rarely missing a June Alumni Reunion Weekend. In fact, Mrs. Healy celebrated her 50th reunion this June.
The Healys have seven children, all outstanding athletes, including Mike who was a football captain at the University of Rhode Island; Christine, a captain of the URI track and field and cross country teams and John, who captained the Massachusetts baseball team and who earned All-Yankee Conference honors in football. The Healys live in Westboro, Mass.
