Kelly Martin 1993 - Soccer, Softball
A first-team America East All-Conference and All-New England performer in soccer and softball, Kelly Martin, a 2006 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, was a captain in both sports and a winner of the 1993 Sunderland Memorial Trophy as the female student-athlete who best exemplified the qualities of character, leadership and persistence in overcoming obstacles.
An excellent hitter in softball, Martin finished fourth all-time with a .330 career batting average for the Catamounts. Captain of the team in 1993, she was Vermont MVP in 1993, was named All-New England as a junior (first team) and senior (second team), was an America East All-Conference (then North Atlantic Conference) First Team selection in 1993 and was named to the All-Championship Team in 1994, setting a then-tournament record for batting average (.636, 7 for 11). In addition to batting average, Martin finished her softball career ranked among the Vermont all-time leaders in hits, runs batted in, doubles, triples, home runs and runs scored.
A dominant defensive player in soccer, she was the team captain in 1992 and 1993, was a first-team all-conference pick both of those years. She also earned All-New England honors in 1990, 1992 and 1993. Named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region team in 1992 and 1993, she played in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior All-Star game in 1993 and played on Vermont's ECAC Championship team as a freshman in 1989. In her career, the Catamounts were 36-28-3.
Martin is currently an assistant women's soccer coach at New Hampshire, a post she has held since 1995. She also was an assistant softball coach at Boston University in 1995 and played with the Boston Renegades, a semi-pro soccer team, from 1996 to 1998, finishing as national runner-up in 1998.
