University of Vermont Athletic Hall of Fame
George H. Cook 1935 - Football, Hockey, Track and Field
Not many individuals have done so much for the University, as a student, or as an alum, as has George "Red" Cook, who was inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 1970. The former football captain at Vermont established himself in athletics while an undergraduate, but perhaps many overlook his other activities on campus in the mid-thirties.
Cook was a nominee of his alma mater for Sports Illustrated's Silver Anniversary College Football All-American Award. Besides football, Cook was a standout on the track and hockey teams. On campus he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, Gold Key and Key and Serpent and the Boulder Society. He served as president of Gold Key and Key and Serpent. In addition, Cook was Class President his sophomore year, circulation manager for the Ariel in 1935, Gold Key dance chairman, member of I.F.C. his junior year, member of Kake Walk Committee his sophomore and junior years and served on various football and basketball dance committees.
With all this, he did not forget his alma mater. Not only did he serve as a Trustee, he was a past President of the Centennial Club, an organization that helps support the athletic program at the University. Cook was a recipient of the "Letter of Life" award, presented by the University of Vermont Varsity Club.
