Shelly Goddette 1985 - Field Hockey, Track and Field
Shelly Goddette, a 1998 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, left her mark upon the track and field program at the University of Vermont as the school-record holder in the javelin.
One of the top throwers in the East during her career, Goddette won many individual meet championships and also was a big-meet performer. As a sophomore, she won the EAIAW (Eastern) Championships with a throw of 156-6, to set a new school record. Goddette also won the New England Championship in the javelin in 1983 throwing 151-7. She broke the Archie T. Post Field record in javelin (144-2) in 1982 at the Vermont State Meet. Her effort also set a Vermont State meet record at the time. In individual and dual meets, Shelly was unbeaten as a sophomore and the Cats as a team did not lose a dual meet while finishing second at the New Englands.
Although Goddette in her junior and senior seasons did not throw for record distances, she was either first or second in every dual meet and capped her final season with another win in the Vermont State Meet.
A field hockey player at UVM for two seasons, Goddette was on the junior varsity her first year at UVM and played on the varsity as a sophomore before concentrating on track and field.
A native of Burlington, Goddette prepped at Rice Memorial High where she was a three-time Vermont state high school champion in the javelin, winning the New England title as a junior. Her brother Tim '82, was a pitcher on the UVM baseball team. In 1985, Goddette received her degree in physical education and was honored by her class as the outstanding senior in her major.
