Carl C. Macomber 1929 - Baseball, Football
Carl Macomber's career as an undergraduate at Vermont was highlighted both by athletics and academics and in 1929, he was inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame.
An outstanding baseball player, Macomber was known as a clutch hitter in the late '20s and a star centerfielder. Called upon to catch in his senior year, when he was also team captain, Macomber responded to the challenge. A regular starter for three seasons, he batted over .300 on a team that compiled an impressive 45-29 record between 1927 and 1929.
In addition to baseball, Macomber played one year of varsity football, and before the season was ended won the starting halfback role and became Vermont's leading ground gainer. A knee injury, suffered while playing baseball one summer, forced him to miss his final year in football.
Upon graduation, he received the George H. Walker Dairy Prize, given to the top agricultural student, the Wasson Athletic Prize, given to the top scholar-athlete, and the Phi Beta Kappa Key. As an undergraduate he also was named to the Alpha Zeta and Boulder Clubs, academic honor societies.
After leaving UVM, Macomber became an instructor in agriculture at Vermont Technical College where he also coached baseball and basketball for four years.
