Henry Semans 1924 - Basketball, Football

Many people call Henry Semans, formerly Henry Semansky, one of the "greatest athletes ever to don the Green and Gold." A 1973 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, Semans won four letters in football and three in basketball, serving as captain of both sports.

Semans never missed a football game in the four years he played end for the Green and Gold. Many proud alumni of his era say that Semans was one of the key men in the stunning 6-3 upset win at Dartmouth in 1922, Vermont's only win ever over Dartmouth in football. One of the most popular athletes ever to perform for Vermont, Semans was presented with $150 in gold between periods of his last varsity basketball contest.

The Semans Trophy, presented annually to the UVM senior athlete who displays, "loyalty to the University, leadership and active participation in athletics and winning respect and regard of his fellow students," is named in his honor.

While at Vermont, Semans was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi, Key and Serpent, the Varsity Club and the sophomore and junior week Committees.

Semans was the president and treasurer of Lee Crane service, Inc. and a member of the Masonic Council of Greater Boston before his death in 1951.
