Archibald T. "Archie" Post 1927 - Basketball, Cross Country, Track and Field

Few men have given as much to the University of Vermont athletic program as has Archie Post, a 1970 UVM Hall of Fame inductee. He was a fine athlete, coach and most important, a good and respected friend.

Gifted in so many areas of athletics, Post was particularly blessed with a great talent in track and the rare knack to coach other students of the game to develop their talent as individual and team competitors. He was first and foremost a teacher. That was his gift to the university, recognized when he was named to the Helms Track Hall of Fame in 1963.

Archie Post competed in several sports - as captain of the basketball and cross-country teams and as a track star. He served as President of the Class of 1927, and continued in an active role in that post after his graduation. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Gold Key, Key and Serpent and the Boulder Society. Following graduation from UVM, he was athletic director of the Sutherland Club in Proctor, Vt., and served as director of intramural athletics at Vermont for many years.

Without benefit of any scholarship help, Post produced one New England (1958) and two Yankee Conference cross-country championship teams. After World War II, Vermont won 19 or 21 state track titles, losing only in 1948 and 1953. That totals 25 championships-and all after 1954. Coach Post served on the Board of Directors of Sigma Delta Psi, the national honorary athletic fraternity.

After over 40 years at the helm of the program, Archie Post retired as an active coach in 1969. His honor was already conferred in the naming of athletic fields and track behind Gutterson Fieldhouse as Post Field.
