Einar Bohmer 1978 - Skiing, Soccer
The 1992 winner of the Wasson Athletic Prize and a 2002 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, Einar Bohmer was best known as a three-time All-American alpine skier and three-time national champion. In the six NCAA alpine races in his last three seasons, he won three titles, came in second twice and third in the other. He also played in the fall on the men’s soccer team and had the distinction of skiing on a national championship ski team and competing in the NCAA Soccer tournament.
The first Norwegian alpine skier at UVM, he was a key contributor on the carnival circuit as a freshman, winning four races. He qualified for the NCAA team but did not score points as the team won the national title. As a sophomore in 1990, Ski Racing Magazine named him the Male Collegiate Skier of the Year after going unbeaten all season in the giant slalom, joining Hall of Famer John Teague ’81 as the only UVM alpine skiers to run the table in one year. He won all six GS races in the carnivals and then made up for his disappointing freshman year by winning the NCAA giant slalom race at Stowe. He added a third-place finish in the NCAA slalom as Vermont repeated as NCAA champs.
He again dominated the alpine events as a junior, winning seven of ten carnival races (four of six in the GS with two seconds) and the NCAA slalom title. He also came in second in the giant slalom as Vermont was the national team runner-up. Bohmer capped his UVM ski career with another NCAA title in the slalom and again finished second in the GS as Vermont won its third national title in his four seasons. He also played one year on the Catamounts soccer team seeing action in 15 games in 1990. A valued reserve at forward, he scored one goal, a late game-winner against Yale, and added an assist as the team won the America East (now named the North Atlantic Conference) Championship and went to the NCAA Tournament.
