Henri Beauchemin 1941 - Baseball, Basketball, Football
A three-sport letterwinner in football, basketball and baseball while at UVM, Henri Beauchemin '41 was a three-year starter and standout on the basketball court as well as the baseball diamond before being inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 2007.
In basketball, Beauchemin helped the Catamounts to three winning seasons and three Vermont state titles, 1937-38, 1938-39 and 1940-41. As a sophomore in 1938, he set a school single-game scoring record with 28 points in a 64-29 win over Middlebury. The Pittsfield, Mass.-native averaged a school-record 14 points per game, seventh highest in New England, during the 1937-38 campaign leading the Catamounts to a 10-4 record.
He went on to earn All-State honors in 1938-39 and in 1940-41 on the court. In his three years as a starter, the UVM hoop team posted a 29-14 record.
Beauchemin was the Catamounts starting shortstop in 1938 (12-11) and started at first base in 1939 (11-11) and 1941 (12-12) under coach Larry Gardner '09. He also played football as a freshman and sophomore before an injury ended his gridiron career.
"Hank was the floor leader on both ends of the floor on some of the best UVM basketball teams of that era," said UVM Athletic Hall of Famer Larry Killick '47. "He was just as important to the team as Don Maley, Frank Taylor and Dick Healy, all Hall of Famers. Hank was instrumental in bringing together such great individual talents."
"He was a great athlete in his time, almost a coach on the floor and on the field," said Hall of Famer, the late Don Maley '41, who passed away in March 2007. "Henri richly deserves to be in the Hall of Fame."
An engineering major, Beauchemin did not participate in athletics in 1939-40 to concentrate on his studies. While at UVM he was selected to the Gold Key, Serpent and Boulder Societies.
