Steve Mammola 1990 - Baseball

One of the top hitters ever to play at Vermont and a 2002 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, is the first Catamount since the rebirth of baseball in 1978 to earn first-team all-conference honors three times. He was an all-ECAC New England selection from 1988 to 1990.

An excellent hitter for both power and average, Mammola left the program as the career leader in several offensive categories. He was the leader in hits (140), doubles (31), triples (9) and total bases (261). He also ranked in the career top-ten in average, runs scored, homers and RBI.

In his sophomore year, 1988, he became the third player (at the time) in UVM baseball history to hit .400 in a season. Following the season he was voted the Larry Gardner Trophy as the team's MVP and was an all-conference outfielder. He also set a record with 72 total bases, a record he would improve upon the next season.

One of the toughest outs in New England each season, in his senior year he hit in the middle of a lineup that also featured standouts Kevin Cashman, Jim Wawruck, Marc Choiniere and Mark Buckler. For the first time, the team hit over .300 and Mammola, at .371, was a key part of their success as they won 18 games and narrowly missed the conference tournament. Following the 1990 season, he selected by his teammates as the winner of the Ralph Lapointe Baseball Award for leadership, dedication and loyalty.

Mammola graduated from UVM in 1990 with a degree in small business administration. He was working as an athletic department fundraiser at Kansas State when he passed away in April of 2002.
