A two-sport athlete at Vermont and 1994 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, Alice Barry Carberry was a four-year member of both the lacrosse and field hockey teams. Carberry competed on the 1977 national team and won its first ever-national title.
After putting in four years at Vermont, Carberry was quoted as being a top-notch defensive player for UVM by coach Janice Lange. Lange recalls that Carberry had an uncanny ability to read plays, and she consistently rose to the occasion in big games In 1978, she earned a coveted ROTC scholarship and stayed on at UVM for an additional year to be an assistant coach in field hockey in 1980 and 1981.
Carberry was also awarded with the Wasson Athletic Prize, in 1980, awarded annually to seniors who maintained the highest level of academic scholarship and athletic achievement. After college, she was assigned to the 568th Engineering Company in Germany, where she met and married David Carberry. In 1991, Carberry earned her PhD in Ecology from the University of North Carolina.
