Carl G. Simpson 1927 - Football, Track and Field
Along with Hall of Famers Albert Gutterson, Olney Hill, John Shepard and Archie Post, Carl Simpson, inducted in 1976, was one of the best trackmen in the early years of the sport at Vermont.
Labeled the "one man track team" for the Catamounts in the 1920s, he set UVM records in the javelin, shot put and discus. He owned the Vermont state marks in the javelin and shot put and the Eastern Intercollegiate record in the javelin. During his junior and senior years, he averaged 14 points per meet, two of them being the New Englands where he won eight points.
At the 1927 Easterns, he was high scorer with 18 points, three first and a second. In the State meet that year, Simpson captured a remarkable total of 21 points with four firsts: javelin, shot put, discus and hammer, and a third in the long jump.
During his college career, he amassed a total of 132 points for the UVM in intercollegiate competition. He captained the 1926 and 1927 track teams and played football in 1926 and 1927 making the All-State team as an end.
Simpson held memberships in Phi Mu Delta as well as the Gold Key, Key and Serpent, Scabbard and Blade, and Boulder Societies at UVM. He was a business manager of the Ariel and the senior class president.
