Scott W. Fitz III, 1966 - Football
Certainly Scott Fitz' records speak of his ability as a football quarterback, but it was his ability to lead that impressed so many followers of Catamount football back in the mid-'60s. During his days as the starting quarterback, Vermont football had its best three-years record: 19-5 from 1963-1965, including a 7-1 mark his junior season, a credible mark in any league. Before his senior year would end, Fitz, a 1987 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, became UVM's career total offense leader and set two other passing marks in 1965.
He established a total offense career record, passing and running for over 1,500 yards. His career total offense record was broken by Little All-America running back Bob Mitchell ('68), who accounted for 2,234 yards rushing and receiving. Fitz also set career marks for most passes completed (108) and passing attempts (265), since broken by three UVM Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Fran Peterson, Earl Olson and Bob Bateman.
An All-State quarterback for two seasons (1964 and 1965), Fitz was the inaugural winner of the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters monthly award - presented to Fitz in 1965 after he engineered the Catamounts to monster wins over AIC and Worcester Tech, as the team scored a total of 84 points. Fitz completed 17 of 34 passes for 285 yards and scored five touchdowns in the two games. Fitz also earned ECAC weekly honors twice during his career.
