Jeff Brown 1982 - Basketball
One of the most respected student-athletes to attend UVM, Jeff Brown, a 1993 Hall of Fame inductee, was one of the top all-around basketball players in the history of the school. When he graduated in 1982, he ranked third on UVM's all-time scoring list with 1,336 points and was the career leader in assists (428) and steals (170). He also ranked among the program leaders in games played, field goals and free throws.
An exceptionally tough and durable player, Brown averaged 12.7 points and 4.1 assists per game throughout his four-year career. As a junior he was an All-New England selection as the Catamounts went 16-12 and reached the semifinals of the then ECAC North (now America East) Tournament. Following the season he was the co-winner of the John 'Fuzzy' Evans Most Valuable Player Award along with UVM Athletic Hall of Famer and classmate Mike Evelti '82. The next season he and Evelti were the team's co-captains.
Immediately following his playing days, Brown started his collegiate coaching career spending three seasons as an assistant at Manhattan before returning to UVM. He was the top assistant under former head coach Tom Brennan at Vermont for several years and helped the Catamounts reach the title game of the conference tournament for the first time in 1990. He went on to Division III Bates as its head coach before moving to his current position as the head coach at Middlebury College in 1996.
Five times since 2000-01, he has led the Panthers to the NESCAC Tournament with Middlebury making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship in 2006.
"Jeff Brown's contributions to our program have been invaluable, both as a player and as a coach," said Brennan. "He epitomizes all that is good about UVM, and he's going to be a great head coach for a long time."
