John P. Hurley 1950 - Baseball, Football, Hockey
Best known for his excellence on the football team, the former All-New England halfback also played hockey and was the starting centerfielder on the baseball team for three seasons. In addition to being named to the All-New England football squad in 1948 (as selected by International News Services), John Hurley, a 1981 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, also was on Tom Harmon's Little All-American checklist and was named All-State in both 1947 and 1948.
In baseball, Hurley hit close to .300 for his four varsity years and was considered an outstanding defensive centerfielder. He captained the 1946 and 1948 teams. During the winter, he was a left-winger on the hockey team.
Hurley was active in many other campus organizations, in addition to athletics. He served as president of Kappa Sigma fraternity and was the first president of the UVM Varsity Club, which was formed in 1948. Hurley also played summer baseball in 1946 and 1947 with the Northern League Burlington Cardinals.
He received his M.A. degree from Springfield College and later coached high school football, basketball and baseball in Rhode Island, Maine and New Jersey. After several years of coaching, Hurley entered the real estate field and has owned his own business since 1960.
