BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman
Sydney Smith set a new career-high for the fourth straight game, scoring 23 points to lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 68-63 victory over Dartmouth in non-conference women's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium Sunday.
Vermont picks up its first win of the season to move to 1-7 overall, while Dartmouth suffers its second loss of the year, falling to 5-2.

Fanni Szabo led all scorers with 25 points to pace Dartmouth. Lakin Roland added 14 points and eight rebounds and Daisy Jordan contributed 12 points for the Big Green.
With the score tied at 8-8 early in the first half, Vermont put together a 14-2 run, fueled by a pair of 3-pointers from Smith, to take a 22-10 lead with 9:10 remaining in the first half.
Dartmouth answered with its own 14-4 run to climb back within two, 26-24 with 4:47 remaining. The Catamounts pushed back out to a six-point lead and went into the break leading 34-30.
Dartmouth opened the second half outscoring Vermont 10-5 to take a 40-39 lead, it's first of the game, at the 16:01 mark. A traditional three-point play by Smith pushed Vermont back in front and the Catamounts outscored Dartmouth 15-8 over a six minutes to extend their lead to 54-48 at the 9:06 mark.
Szabo drained a 3-pointer to bring Dartmouth back within three and a pair of free throws by Roland cut the lead to one, 54-53, with 7:48 remaining. Dartmouth tied the game up at 56-56 on another basket by Szabo with 6:05 left.
Jordan Eisler converted a layup and Smith made a pair of free throws to push Vermont back in front by four with just over five minutes left in the game.
Szabo scored again for Dartmouth, on a layup at the 3:37 mark, to bring the Big Green within one, 62-61, but Atwood made a two free throws with 1:40 left to give UVM a three-point cushion. Jordan hit two free throws for Dartmouth with 52 seconds left to slice the lead back to one, 64-63.
The Catamounts secured the win by making four straight free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Vermont will take a break for finals and returns to action on December 14 when the Catamounts host a basketball doubleheader at Patrick Gymnasium. Both UVM basketball teams host Wagner. The two men's teams tipoff the doubleheader at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the women's teams at 3:30 p.m.
