Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to #2 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Catamounts had five different scorers as Vermont (0-1) dropped their season opener to second-ranked Syracuse (2-0).

"Great game by Syracuse today, it's an awesome environment and learning opportunity for our guys," said head coach Chris Feifs. "I was really impressed with how fast Syracuse started and how many weapons they have. I thought they did an excellent job of coming out ready to play and jumped on us early."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Orange started on a six-goal run through two goals from Joey Spallina and goals from Trey Deere, Owen Hiltz, Finn Thomson, and Luke Rhoa.
  • Jack Combs ended the Syracuse run when he scored off an assist from Matthew Drimmie with just over 10 minutes played.
  • The Orange then went on a four-goal run to close the half. Spallina had two goals, while Deere and Payton Anderson each had one.
  • Syracuse opened the second half on a two-goal run through goals from Thomson and Spallina.
  • Drimmie got his first career goal when he scored five minutes into the third quarter off an assist from Luke Reiter.
  • Hiltz gave the Orange back an 11-goal lead with a man-up goal and three minutes to go in the quarter.
  • The Catamounts went on a three-goal run through goals from Cullen Decker, Tristan Whitaker, and Charlie Pope to end the game.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Drimmie was the leading scorer for Vermont, scoring two points on his first career assist and goal.
  • On the defensive side, Ryan Daly had a career-high 18 saves with two ground balls.
  • Combs led the Catamounts in ground balls with seven, while Henry Dodge was second with 10.
  • Dodge also went 12-18 from the faceoff spot.
  • The Catamounts forced seven turnovers, including a career-high four from Eddie Schwasnick.
