First Round Recap: UVM 1, UMBC 0Vermont recorded its first-ever America East playoff win on Thursday with a 1-0 shutout victory over No. 6 UMBC in the first-ever night game at Virtue Field.
Junior
Dana Buckhorn's first career tally, a strike from 23 yards out, in the 37th minute proved to be the game winner. The UVM defense made the goal stand up and senior goalkeeper
Ally Ramos did not have to make a save to earn her eighth win of the season and fifth clean sheet.
Vermont earned its fourth playoff appearance in five years under head coach
Kristi Lefebvre with a 2-1 victory at Binghamton in the regular season finale. UVM trailed 1-0 in the second half, but scored twice in a 90-second span, capped by
Nikki McFarland's game-winning tally in the 72nd minute to earn a 2-1 victory.
The victory over the Bearcats pulled Vermont into a three-way tie with Albany and Maine. The Catamounts finished behind Albany in the tiebreak, but beat Maine during the regular season to take the No. 3 seed. It is the highest seed for the program since Vermont was the top seed in a four-team playoff in 1996.
Vermont stands at 8-7-2, collecting the most wins since 2005. The Catamounts are 12-6-1 against the Great Danes in the all-time series. Albany visited Burlington on October 18 and came away with a 2-0 win at Virtue Field. Kiana Rugar picked up two assists to lead the Great Danes. UVM owns a 3-2 advantage over Albany in the last five matches between the two teams.
Vermont and Albany meet for the third time in five years in the America East Playoffs. Albany posted a 2-1 double-overtime win on its home turf over the Catamounts in the first round during the 2011 playoffs. UVM avenged the loss the next season, advancing to the semifinals by edging the Great Danes 3-2 on penalty kicks at Virtue Field.
The Vermont/Albany winner will move on to face the Maine/Hartford winner in the America East Championship Game on November 7 or 8 at the highest remaining seed.
