VESTAL, N.Y. – Sydney Smith and
Kayla Burchill scored 15 points each for Vermont, but Sherae Swinson and Imani Watkins netted 18 points apiece to lead Binghamton to a 73-62 over the Catamounts in America East women's basketball action at the Events Center on Saturday. Binghamton improves to 4-12 overall and 2-1 in America East. Vermont falls to 3-12 and 0-3 in league play.
Smith and Burchill combined to hit all of UVM's six 3-pointers in the game. Smith added seven rebounds to her 10th double-digit scoring performance of the year.
Kylie Butler added a game-high 12 rebounds and eight points, while
Niki Taylor chipped in six points and seven boards.
Swinson was 9-for-12 from the floor and added 11 rebounds to finish the game with a double-double. Jasmine Sina added 17 points and Kim Albrecht totaled 14 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Bearcats.
A pair of free throws by Taylor with 4:02 left in the first half gave Vermont a 21-20 lead. Binghamton closed the half out scoring Vermont 10-6 and went to the locker room up 30-27.
Vermont trailed by one, 38-37, after a 3-pointer by Burchill, but the Bearcats answered with nine straight points to push out to a 47-37 advantage with 12:23 left in the game.
The Catamounts stormed back, tying the game up at 49 on another 3-pointer by Burchill with 8:48 showing on the clock, but could not regain the lead.
UVM stayed within striking distance, but Binghamton used a 7-0 run, led by five points from Watkins, to push out to a 61-53 lead. Vermont closed within four, 66-62, with 1:18 left, but Binghamton went 7-for-8 from the foul line to secure the win.
Vermont returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 14) when it hosts New Hampshire at Patrick Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
