BOSTON – The Boston University Terriers outlasted the Vermont Catamounts' second half comeback effort to post a 66-61 win at Case Gymnasium in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
Boston U evens its record to 2-2, while Vermont falls to 0-3 on the year.
"I'm very proud of the effort and the resolve of our team to stay in the ball game and battle back. I thought we had our chances. BU played well, but we were right there, if we had a couple shots fall then we come out on the winning end. Our kids played hard and executed the game plan today," said Vermont head coach
Lori Gear McBride.
Kylie Butler and
Niki Taylor paced the Catamounts with 13 points each and the duo combined for 11 rebounds. Taylor has seven of the 11, all on the offensive glass. Both Catamounts have reached double figures in the scoring column in the first three games of the year.
Meghan Green led four Terriers in double figures with a game-high 14 points, but only two in the second half, and added nine rebounds.
Vermont trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half and Boston U held a 33-25 lead at the break.
The Catamounts trailed by nine at the 17:19 mark of the second half. Vermont answered with a 15-4 run, fueled by seven points from
Kayla Burchill. Burchill's free throws at the 11:05 mark capped the run and pushed Vermont ahead 46-44, its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest.
Courtney Latham tied the game up for the sixth time on the afternoon with a layup at the 8:41 mark. Clodah Scannell added a pair of free throws on the next Terrier possession to put Boston U back in front, 50-48.
Scannell pushed BU's lead to five on a 3-pointer with 2:12 left in the game, but three free throws by Vermont closed the gap to two with over a minute remaining.
Another timely 3-pointer for the Terriers, this time by Sarah Hope, pushed Boston U back out in front by five, 60-55, with 1:37 left. The Catamounts closed to within four in the final minute, but the Terriers secured the win with a 6-for-8 effort from the foul line to close out the game.
