Strong Start Leads Catamounts Over UMass Lowell

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Anna Olson led all scorers with 18 points as Vermont (7-10, 2-1 AE) led from the start as they defeated UMass Lowell (2-13, 0-3 AE) on Thursday morning.

"I think when our guards can get our posts the ball at the right time and our posts can make the right decisions, and they have to change to the game that can put a lot of pressure on other teams," said Mayer Head Women's Basketball Coach Alisa Kresge. "I think we are playing with confidence and when we are taking the shots within our wheelhouse, they are really hard to defend."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Catamounts opened the game on an 8-2 run, with Olson scoring all eight points into the first media timeout.
  • Vermont went on a 14-6 run to close the quarter with six points from Emma Haan, four from Bella Vito, and four from Olson.
  • The Catamounts took a 10-4 run into the second media timeout with five points from Malia Lenz, three from Sarah Ericson, and two from Vito.
  • The two teams traded baskets to close out the half, with Vermont outscoring the River Hawks 13-11. Nikola Priede scored seven points in that stretch, with four from Olson and two from Catherine Gilwee.
  • The Catamounts went back and forth to start the third quarter but outscored UMass Lowell 10-9 heading into the third media timeout. Gilwee had six, while Olson and Priede each had two.
  • Following the media timeout, the Catamounts closed on a 10-7 run to take a 65-39 lead. Keira Hanson had five, Priede and Piper Risdon each had two, and Lenz had one.
  • Vermont started the fourth quarter slowly as they outscored River Hawks 3-2 in the first five minutes of the fourth, with Priede scoring all three points.
  • UMass Lowell outscored the Catamounts the rest of the way 11-9, with Lenz scoring six points, Risdon having two, and Sarah Lazar having one.

  • Olson led all scorers with 18 on 8-9 shooting, which matches a season high for her. Priede and Lenz were second and third with 14 and 12, respectively, which are both new career highs for the pair.
  • With her 18 points today, Olson becomes just the 10th Catamounts to score over 1500 in her career.
  • Vito was Vermont's top rebounder with 10 rebounds, the second time she has had double-figure rebounds this season. Priede was second with six.
  • Gilwee was the Catamount's top distributor with seven, which matches a season high. Olson and Vito were the other Vermont players who had multiple assists.
  • On the defensive side, the Catamounts matched a season-high in steals with 10 as Vito and Lenz combined for half of them. Priede led Vermont to six blocked shots with three of her own.
  • The Catamounts scored a season-high 77 points, which came on 56.9% shooting, which is another season-best.
  • Vermont improved to 5-0 on the season when they shot above 50 percent and are 23-0 in this situation over the last four years combined.
