Catamounts Wrap Up Homestand with Dominant Win

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 74, Bryant 43
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Anna Olson led all scorers with 18 points as Vermont (8-10, 3-1 AE) never allowed more than 12 points in a quarter to defeat Bryant (8-8, 1-2 AE) on Saturday afternoon.

"I liked how we responded when it wasn't smooth to start and we didn't get in our own way, we just cleaned it up and were assertive and executed our game plan. The quick turnaround from not starting smoothly to fixing it, is what I am most excited about from this game," said Mayer Head Women's Basketball Coach Alisa Kresge. "They have realized that when you work really hard it usually pays off, and they get to enjoy the fruits of their labor in games and in front of crowds."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams opened trading baskets, with the Catamounts taking an 8-6 lead with Anna Olson, Catherine Gilwee, Nikola Priede, and Bella Vito scoring.
  • After the first media timeout, Vermont closed the quarter on a 9-5 run, with Olson scoring six and Keira Hanson with three.
  • The Catamounts opened the second quarter on a 16-5 run, with Olson scoring six, Malia Lenz with five, Hanson with three, and Priede with two.
  • Vermont closed the half on an 11-5 with Lenz scoring five, Olson having four, and Vito getting two.
  • The Catamounts opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run with eight points from Priede and three from Gilwee.
  • Bryant closed the third quarter on a 10-5 run, with Sarah Ericson and Sarah Lazar scoring for Vermont.
  • The Catamounts traded baskets to start the fourth, outscoring the Bulldogs 4-2 in the first five minutes. Vito and Priede scored for Vermont.
  • The teams traded baskets to finish the game, with the Catamounts outscoring Bryant 10-8. Lazar scored five points, Emma Haan had three, Ericson had one, and Devon Yarde recorded her first career point.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Olson led all scorers with 18 points for the second straight game. She matched her career high in made field goals with nine. Priede and Lenz were the other double-digit scorers for the second consecutive game.
  • Vermont had a season-high 32 field goals and had season-highs in shooting percentages from the field and deep. They shot 60.4% from the field and 53.3% from deep.
  • Lazar led the Catamounts in rebounds with five while four others had four.
  • Vermont had 20 assists for the second time this season as Gilwee led the way with five, while Hanson had a season-high of four.
  • The Catamounts had a season-low six turnovers as well.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TO CELEBRATE NGWSD FEB. 8 
The UVM Women's Basketball team will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day powered by Vermont Mutual Insurance Group on Saturday, Feb. 8, during their game against UAlbany at 2:00 p.m.
 
On Feb. 8, girls from the local community interested in sports and being involved in this celebration will have the opportunity to become members of the UVM Athletic Staff for the day. Girls between 4th and 8th grade can apply to a wide variety of positions including: Public Address Announcer, Marketing Assistant, Ticket Staff, and many more! Participants will be able to work in the position for one half of the game; for the other half, they will be able to watch the game with family. 
 
All applications must be submitted by 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23. Participants selected will be informed by 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the very latest. Those chosen to participate will receive a free ticket and discounted tickets for family and friends who wish to attend the game.
