Women's Basketball Defeats Missouri on Opening Night

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 62, Missouri 46
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Anna Olson led the way with 18 points as Vermont (1-0) held Missouri (0-1) to 12 points across the second and third quarters en route to an opening night victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Missouri opened on a 6-0 run with four points from Laniah Randle.
  • The Catamounts then went on a 16-8 into the first media timeout, with Olson leading the way with six points. Vermont also had five others record baskets.
  • Vermont finished the quarter outscoring the Tigers, 7-6, with Olson, Keira Hanson, and Malia Lenz scoring.
  • The Catamounts opened the second quarter on a five-nothing basis with buckets from Bella Vito and Hanson.
  • The Vermont defense held Missouri without a field goal until 90 seconds left in the half when Angelique Ngalakulondi scored a layup to make it 30-25.
  • The Catamounts took a 9-3 run into the third quarter media timeout with four points from Nikola Priede and buckets from Sarah Ericson and Vito.
  • With just over three minutes left in the third quarter, Catherine Gilwee hit a three to make it 42-28. The basket was her first since March 18, 2023.
  • The Tigers finished the quarter on a 4-2 run, with Grace Slaughter and Ashton Judd having two.
  • Vermont opened the fourth on a 7-0 run with buckets from Gilwee, Olson, and Ericson.  
  • The Catamounts held on to a 17-point lead and even made it a 20-point lead with 50 seconds to go.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Olson was Vermont's leading scorer with 18 points, and Vito was the other Catamount in double figures with 13.
  • Gilwee and Hanson led Vermont from deep, each hitting two threes.
  • Defensively, Olson led the way with seven rebounds, while Vito and Sarah Lazar each had four.
  • The win is the Catamounts first in program history over an SEC program. They came into the game previously without a win in 11 tries against SEC schools.
  • With the win, Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate $100 to the Vermont Children's Trust Foundation as part of the Cats Win Community Wins initiative.
 
UP NEXT
Vermont will travel to Minnesota on Friday (Nov. 8) to take on the Golden Gophers at 8:00 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on Big Ten Plus.
