Women's Basketball Falls to Rice in Cancun

Cancun, MX – Rice (5-3) hit eight second-half threes to propel them to victory over Vermont (4-5) on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Catamounts opened the first quarter on a quick 5-2 run in the first minute, with Bella Vito and Keira Hanson each scoring.
  • The two teams traded buckets heading into the first media timeout, with each team scoring seven. Hanson and Vito each hit threes, while Catherine Gilwee scored on a free throw.
  • Following the media timeout, Rice closed it to 17-14 before Vermont ended the first quarter on a 4-2 run.
  • Gilwee had five for the Catamounts after the media timeout, and Hanson and Anna Olson each scored as well.
  • Olson scored Vermont's first four points of the second quarter to push the lead to 25-18.
  • The Owls proceeded on a 9-2 run heading into the second media timeout. Malia Lenz scored the lone basket for the Catamounts in that stretch.
  • Rice then closed the half on a 10-4 run to take a 37-31 halftime lead. Olson had the last four points for Vermont and scored eight of their 10 second-quarter points.
  • The Owls opened the second and took a 9-3 run into the third media timeout, with Olson scoring all three points for the Catamounts.
  • Rice then went on a 7-3 run with Hanson, the lone scorer for Vermont.
  • The Owls finished the quarter on a 10-6 run with four points from Gilwee and two from Olson.
  • Rice opened the fourth quarter on a 12-7 run to take a 75-50 lead into the final media timeout. Vito had four for the Catamounts, while Hanson had three.
  • Vermont ended the game outscoring the Owls 7-4 with Sarah Ericson, Lexi Kerstein, Piper Risdon, and Nikola Priede scoring.

  • Olson and Lenz led the Catamounts on the boards with four each. Vito was third with two.
