Strong Second Half Leads Seawolves Past Women’s Basketball

FINAL SCORE: Stony Brook 67, Vermont 49
STONY BROOK, N.Y.  – India Pagan had 20 points as Stony Brook won its 13th straight home game Wednesday night 67-49 over the Catamounts at the Island Federal Arena. The Seawolves pulled away from Vermont with an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter. With the win the Seawolves are now 3-0 in conference play while the Catamounts fall to 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • America East Player of the Week India Pagan had six early points as the Seawolves jumped out to an early lead. Stony Brook closed the first quarter on a 9-2 run fueled by two three-pointers from Oksana Gouchie-Provencher to take a 22-14 lead.
  • Hanna Crymble lead a Catamount comeback in the second frame with eight points. UVM went on a 10-0 run over a 2:29 span to take its first lead of the game 28-26. Delaney Richason and Sarah Wells hit back-to-back three pointers for Vermont in the run. Crymble scored the final bucket of the half with 22 seconds left to give the Catamounts a 32-30 lead at the break.
  • The Seawolves opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run in the first 74 seconds of the half. America East's best defense clamped down in the third quarter as Stony Brook held UVM to just two made field goals. Stony Brook took an 46-38 lead into the final frame.
  • Stony Brook's offense stayed hot in the fourth quarter, they used an 11-0 run to pull away from the Catamounts and seal their 12th straight win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Wednesday night was the third straight America East contest where Stony Brook trailed at the half, the Seawolves have won all three games.
  • Hanna Crymble was a perfect eight-for-eight from the charity stripe in the first half.
 
WHO'S NEXT
The Catamounts return home on Saturday, January 11 for their annual Rally Against Cancer game presented by Inspired Closets and benefitting the UVM Cancer Center. The team will be wearing lavender jerseys which will be auctioned off starting January 10 and running until January 16, the auction can be found at uvmathletics.com/auctions. Bidding will start at $125 and proceeds will go to the UVM Cancer Center. Fans are encouraged to wear lavender which is the color the represents the fight against all cancers.
 
The Catamounts will face UMBC with the opening tip set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on AmericaEast.TV, fans can also listen to the contest on WVMT AM 620/96.3 FM with Maura Sheridan on the call.
