Canisius Defeats Women’s Basketball Friday Afternoon

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Danielle Sanderlin scored a game-high 17 points leading Canisius to a 67-46 win over Vermont Friday afternoon in non-conference action at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the win the Griffs improved to 2-9 while the Catamounts dropped to 4-7.

COACH'S QUOTE
"One of the hardest games of the year is the game before the holiday break and it looked like we were already on break," said head coach Alisa Kresge. "Canisius took away our strengths which was exactly what we were expecting and what we worked on all week. We have to find ways to still be successful and execute a game plan when teams want to double and triple team our post players. We are going to see a lot more of this kind of game plan which means we have to keep developing our perimeter game."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Catamounts came out strong in the first quarter using an 8-0 run fueled by three-pointers from Cassidy Derda (4 Pts) and Josie Larkins (7 Pts) to build a 14-6 edge. The Griffs pushed back and Vermont held two-point lead after the opening frame.
  • Canisius built off its momentum starting the second quarter on a 10-0 run in the opening minutes led by two three-pointers from Anna Sweny (11 Pts). The Griffs took a 32-24 lead into the half, it was the third time this season they'd held a lead at the half.
  • Early in the third quarter Vermont went on a 5-0 run with field goals from Courtney Wright (4 Pts) and Asha Scott (4 Pts) making it 36-33. Sara Hinriksdottir (10 Pts), the Griffs leading scorer this season, responded with five points as Canisius answered with their own 10-0 run.
  • The Griffs pulled away in the fourth quarter outscoring Vermont by 10 to seal their second win of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Candice Wright matched a program single-game record with eight blocks this afternoon. Karena Zornow had eight blocks against Rhode Island on November 15, 1998 and Patti Heffernan had eight facing Brooklyn on November 23, 1988.
  • Hanna Crymble led the Catamounts in scoring for the eighth consecutive game with 12 points. She has been Vermont's leading scorer in nine of their 11 games.
