Second Quarter Surge Leads Kansas Past Women’s Basketball

FINAL SCORE: Kansas 77, Vermont 36
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Brianna Osorio scored a game-high 16 points leading Kansas to a 77-36 win over Vermont Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Allen Fieldhouse. With the win the Jayhawks improved to 10-1 while the Catamounts dropped to 4-8.
 
COACH'S QUOTE
"I was very pleased with the way we started the game and finished the game," said head coach Alisa Kresge. "We executed our game plan defensively and put ourselves in a position to be successful offensively. We have things we need to continue to improve on but we feel good about the state of the team heading into conference play." 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Candice and Courtney Wright combined to score the first eight points of the game for Vermont as they took an early 10-7 lead 5:27 into the first quarter. The Jayhawks ended the opening frame on an 8-1 run to take a four-point cushion into the second frame.
  • The second quarter was controlled by the Jayhawks. Vermont was just 1-for-13 from the field as Kansas outscored the Catamounts 19-2, taking a 21-point edge into the half.
  • The Jayhawks offense kicked it up a notch in the third quarter, Kansas scored 24 points in the third quarter their most all season. In the opening half the two teams were a combined 1-for-19 from downtown, in the third quarter Kansas hit all three of their attempts as they continued to stretch their advantage.
  • Vermont closed the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run in the final 2:15 of game action. Hanna Crymble (6 Pts), Candice Wright (14 Pts) and Rose Caverly (3 Pts) led the late charge for the Catamounts. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Courtney Wright made the second start of her career, and first since her freshman campaign Sunday. She chipped in seven points and gathered two rebounds.
  • Rose Caverly saw her first game action since an injury in the first half of Vermont's tilt against Yale on December 8.
  • After tying a program record with 8 blocks against Canisius on December 21, Candice Wright had a game-high five blocks today.
  • Today's game was the first time since November 15 that Hanna Crymble was not the Catamounts leading scorer.   
WHO'S NEXT
Vermont starts 2019 with its America East opener at UMass Lowell on Wednesday, January 2 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
