BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont picked up its second win of the season as the Catamounts topped NJIT 64-42 on the first night of the TD Bank Classic on Friday at Patrick Gymnasium.

Both teams are now 2-3 following Friday's results in which

Lauren Handy and
Sydney Smith each had 12 points.
Candice Wright helped the Catamounts to a quick start, scoring the two opening buckets of the game as Vermont took an early 7-2 advantage in the first quarter. Crymble also had four points in the opening frame as the squad took a 13-8 lead by period's end.
In the second quarter Vermont extended its lead thanks to strong 3-point shooting. Handy, Smith and
Kallie Banker hit from deep as UVM stretched the lead to 12 midway through the quarter with an 8-0 run. The Catamounts took a 26-17 lead into the half with Banker leading Vermont in scoring with six points. NJIT's Leah Horton led the way for the Highlanders with 10 first half points.
Late in the third quarter Vermont took over the game with a 10-0 run to extend its lead to 21 points. In a span of 3:07, UVM hit five free throws and
Kylie Butler hit from beyond the arc. The Catamounts led 47-27 after the third quarter.
UVM then stretched its lead to a game-high 25 points in the early stages of the final quarter. After Horton converted a 3-point play at the 8:16 mark, the Catamounts responded with a mini 5-0 sequence on a jumper from Handy and 3-pointer by
Kristina White, moving the score to 55-30.
Vermont forced 13 turnovers by the Highlanders on the night and converted that number into 17 points.
Milwaukee defeated LIU Brooklyn by an 89-50 margin in the opening game of the TD Bank Classic. Milwaukee's Jenny Lindner led all scorers in the game with 17 points. UVM will face the Panthers in the TD Bank Classic championship game tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Patrick Gymnasium.
