Catamounts Use Strong Defense and Efficient Shooting to Defeat Maine

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Anna Olson led the way with 19 points as Vermont (15-11, 10-2 AE) held Maine (12-13, 7-5 AE) to only eight first-half points en route to victory.

"Maine is a very talented team that can put up numbers and disrupt tendencies. Our players were hungry for another opportunity to execute a game plan and beat another talented team," said Mayer Women's Head Coach Alisa Kresge. "We are at the point in the season, where it's no regret mentality and we keep showing up, which is really important for us right now. We are working on still being very disciplined, even keeled and hungry. Every team can win in this league, and we can't look ahead and must stay focused."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Catamounts hit their first four shots of the game to start on an 8-0 run, forcing the Black Bears into an early timeout. Olson, Catherine Gilwee, Bella Vito, and Keira Hanson scored in the stretch.
  • Vermont closed the quarter on a 13-2 run with Gilwee scoring four, Nikola Priede having three, Olson, Hanson, and Vito all added a bucket to finish it.
  • The two teams traded baskets to start the second quarter, with the Catamounts holding a slight 6-4 edge before the second media timeout. Olson, Priede, and Hanson all scored in the stretch.
  • Vermont closed the half on a 4-2 burst, with Olson and Vito each scoring.
  • The Catamounts opened the second half outscoring Maine 13-8. Olson had seven, while Vito, Priede, and Emma Haan had two.
  • The two teams closed the third quarter, scoring six each. Olson, Sarah Ericson, and Priede all had two in the stretch.
  • Vermont went on a 6-5 run to start the fourth quarter, with Olson having four and Vito scoring two.
  • The Catamounts outscored the Black Bears, 9-7, to close out the game. Hanson had three, while Vito, Malia Lenz, and Emma Haan each had two.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Olson led the scoring for Vermont with 19 points. Vito and Priede were the other Catamounts in double figures with 12 and 11.
  • Ericson was the top rebounder with six. Vito was second with five, while Priede and Hanson were tied for third with four.
  • Gilwee was Vermont's leader in assists with five. Hanson and Vito were second with three, while Olson was third with two.
  • Defensively, the Catamounts held Maine to a season-low 34 points, which came on 26.1% shooting, another season-low.
  • Vermont also had seven steals, with Vito responsible for four.
  • The Catamounts also shot over 60% from the field this season as they went 30-50.
  • Vermont's 31-point victory is tied for the largest win over Maine since 2010.
