COACH'S QUOTE
"I thought our team did a great job staying in the moment and not letting runs of the game get us too high or too low," said Mayer Head Women's Basketball Coach Alisa Kresge. "As a team, we had big time plays offensively and big time stops defensively. We knew this was going to be a hard fought battle until the final buzzer and I'm very proud of the fight and mettle we showed, especially down the stretch."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vermont gained an early 5-0 lead after Emma Utterback kick scoring off with a three-pointer followed by Bella Vito cashing her jump shot with 7:56 to go in the first quarter.
  • UAlbany rallied with eight unanswered points to take a 8-5 edge with 5:39 remaining in the quarter.
  • Anna Olson got the Catamounts back on the board, making a post move in the paint and scoring her layup to cut the lead down to one, 8-7, with 4:44 left.
  • With 1:22 to go in the opening frame, Vermont forced a UAlbany shot clock violation, allowing the Catamounts to snatched back the lead after moving the ball around, opening up Keira Hanson to roll off the pick and swish a pull up mid-range shot. UVM took a 9-8 advantage into the second frame.
  • Andjela Matic found Hanson for a three-pointer to start scoring in the second quarter, Vermont took a 12-8 lead.
  • The Great Danes bounced back, going on a 9-2 run before the first commercial timeout of the quarter with 4:52 remaining. The Catamounts trailed, 17-14.
  • Olson and Hanson stabbed into an 8-4 scoring run to finish the second quarter for Vermont, heading into halftime behind by seven, 25-18.
  • After UAlbany opened scoring, four Catamounts contributed to the 10 points scored within the competitive 10-7 scoring run to begin the third quarter. Delaney Richason and Olson each had three points in the run. Vermont trailed 32-28 with 3:56 remaining in the third frame.
  • Olson fed Vito who drained her mid-range jump shot to bring the Cats within two, 32-30, with 3:18 remaining in the quarter.
  • UAlbany closed out the third quarter scoring two baskets to give them a 36-31 edge heading into the final quarter.
  • A steal by Hasnon led to Utterback breaking free, driving hard to the rim and making her layup attempt to bring the Cats within three, 36-33, with 8:30 of gametime remaining.
  • On the next possession, Vito found Hanson behind the arc in front of their own bench where she nailed her three-pointer to tie the game, 36-36, with 7:56 remaining, forcing UAlbany to call a timeout.
  • Both teams battled back and forth for a little over six minutes, trading off massive baskets on each end before a series of timeouts were called. Vito gave Vermont a 43-42 lead with 2:42 of gametime remaining after making her corner mid-range shot in front of her own bench.
  • Utterback responded to Kayla Cooper's layup with a driving layup basket of her own with 0:37 left in the game to retain the lead, 45-44.
  • After another layup from Cooper on the next possession, Vermont found themselves down 46-45 with 0:33 left.
  • After passing back and forth with Richason, Utterback dialed up the basket of the game, swishing a clutch three-pointer with 0:14 remaining to give the Catamounts a 48-46 advantage with time quickly expiring.
  • Utterback corralled the defensive rebound on the next UAlbany possession. Vermont forced UAlbany to foul down the stretch resulting in Olson getting fouled which sent her to the free-throw line. Olson was able to seal the deal, making both free-throws, earning Vermont the 50-46 semifinal victory over the Great Danes.
