WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK
Vermont (18-6, 10-2 AE) travels to Durham, New Hampshire on Wednesday to battle with America East foe New Hampshire (7-17, 2-10 AE). The Catamounts are looking to extend their longest winning streak since the 2002 season to 11 games. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. AMERICA EAST PLAY
The Catamounts have earned 10 straight victories, all coming in America East play. Vermont got a critical win over Maine at Patrick Gym Wednesday (Feb. 8) 68-60 and then defeated UMass Lowell on the road on Saturday (Feb. 11) 58-39. During their 10-game winning streak Vermont is 5-0 at home and 5-0 on the road. The Catamounts hold the longest winning streak in America East at 10 games. The Catamounts are currently second in America East at 10-2 just behind UAlbany who is 11-2 in conference play. Maine and UMBC round out the top three tied at 9-4 in America East play. New Hampshire comes into Wednesday's matchup sitting in seventh place at 2-10 in conference play.
WINNING STREAKS IN THE NCAA AND VERMONT
The Catamounts 10-game winning streak is tied for 10th in the NCAA as the longest in the country. #1 South Carolina has the longest winning streak in the country at 31 games. In New England, only Boston University (13 games) and Rhode Island (12 games) have longer winning streaks than Vermont. UMass is tied with the Catamounts at 10 wins.
The longest winning streak in program history is 29 games. The 1991-92 Catamounts were undefeated in the regular season going 26-0 before winning the North Atlantic Conference to go 29-0. In the NAC Tournament, the Catamounts won their three games by an average margin of 28.6 points. The 1991-92 team was the first Vermont basketball team to make the NCAA Tournament. They fell 70-69 in the First Round against George Washington.
AMONG THE LEADERS IN AMERICA EAST PLAY
The Catamounts are second in the conference in scoring with 61.7 per game and first in points allowed and scoring margin, giving up just 53.5 points per game with a plus 8.2 scoring margin, which is also first in the conference. Vermont leads America East in team field goal percentage (43.2 percent) and lead the conference in opponent field goal percentage (36.4 percent). UVM also ranks first in the conference in three point percentage converting 37.7 percent of their chances behind the arc, with the next closest team being Maine coming in at 33.5 percent. The Catamounts are also third in opponent three point percentage allowing just 28.0 percent of their opponents chances from behind the arc. Vermont averages the least turnovers in the conference with 13.2 per game and their 0.88 margin is second, while their assist to turnover ratio (1.05) is first. The Catamounts are the only team with three scorers in the top 13 of the conference being led by
Emma Utterback's 13.7 points per game which is fourth in the conference. Junior
Anna Olson ranks seventh with 12.2 points and
Catherine Gilwee is 13th with 11.0 points per contest. Olson is also fifth in the conference with 6.5 rebounds per contest, while Gilwee is second in America East in three point percentage knocking down 40.3 percent of her treys. Gilwee is also second draining 2.4 three pointers per game. Olson leads the conference in field goal percentage at 50.7 percent and is fourth in free throw percentage at 74.7 percent this year. Utterback is 11th in field goal percentage at 41.4 percent from the field. Utterback is second in the conference in assists (101), assists per game (4.2) and leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.8).
CATAMOUNTS AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
As a team, the Catamounts are shooting 37.8 percent from three which has them ranked ninth in the country. Their 43.2 percent from the floor which is 85th nationally. Vermont's 1.05 assist to turnover ratio is 64th nationally and their +8.2 scoring margin is 77th in the country. On defense, the 36.4 percent shooting allowed is ranked 31st in the country while their 28.0 percent three point percentage allowed is 46th in the nation. Vermont is also ranked ninth in the country allowing just 53.5 points per game through 24 games.
NET RANKINGS
The current 2022-23 NET rankings were released on Monday with Vermont coming in at 143. UAlbany followed the Catamounts at 187 while Maine rounded out the top three for America East coming in at 206. Binghamton and UMBC are the only other America East teams in the top 300 coming in at 268 and 287 respectively.
LEVEL OF CONSISTENCY
Along with the University of Oklahoma UVM is the only team in the country to have the same starting five in every game this season, 24 games. Four of Vermont's starting five are averaging 30.0 minutes or more per game and are in the top 20 in minutes played in America East. Utterback is third in the conference at 34.9 minutes a game and Gilwee is fourth at 34.2 minutes per contest.
VERMONT CONTINUES TO CRUISE
Vermont comes into Wednesday with a 10-game winning streak and have improved to 10-2 overall in the America East after starting out 0-2. During their streak, Vermont has been dominant on defense outscoring teams by 11.6 a game and holding them to just 49,8 points per game on 35.3 percent shooting and only 26.9 percent from three. The Catamounts also have a +3.0 turnover margin forcing 14.4 turnovers per contest, while only committing 11.4 themselves. On offense, Vermont is scoring 61.4 points during these 10 games while shooting 43.5 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from three point range.
Delaney Richason has stepped up her game averaging 11.6 points on 52.5 percent shooting from three, while Utterback leads the Catamounts averaging 13.2 points, 3.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game on 43.9 percent shooting. Olson is scoring 13.1 points per game and grabbing a team-high 6.6 rebounds on 54.2percent shooting per game during the Catamounts winning streak. In two victories last week Olson averaged a double-double with 11.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. During this stretch Vermont is 5-0 at home and 5-0 on the road with victories over the other eight teams in America East. The 10-game winning streak is the longest since the 2008 season and is the longest regular season winning streak for the Catamounts since 2002.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
New Hampshire enters Wednesday's matchup 7-17 overall and 2-10 in America East play. The Wildcats are coming off a 56-45 defeat at home on Monday (Feb. 13). Adara Groman and first year Avery O'Connor led the way for the Wildcats with 12 points each while O'Connor added nine rebounds and one block and Groman contributed three rebounds, two assists and two steals. UNH has defeated Bryant and UMass Lowell in America East play defeating the Bulldogs at home (66-47) and the River Hawks on the road (56-51). On offense, the Wildcats are averaging 54.4 points per game on 35.0 percent shooting from the floor and 28.1 percent from behind the arc. UNH is grabbing down 35.7 rebounds per game while dishing out 8.8 assists per contest. On defense New Hampshire is allowing 62.0 points per game on 38.0 percent shooting overall and 31.6 percent from three point range while also registering 8.2 steals and 3.3 blocks per contest. New Hampshire was selected tied for seventh in America East Preseason Poll receiving a total of 21 points. Brooke Kane is leading the way with 13.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 34.1 minutes per game while starting every contest this season. O'Connor is second on the team and third among America East first years averaging 11.6 points per game on 31.0 percent shooting from the floor to go with 6.2 rebounds and 0.8 assists per contest. First year Breezie Williams is averaging a team-high 2.8 assists from her guard position to go with 5.4 rebounds and 10.0 points per game.
INSIDE THE SERIES
This will be the 90th matchup all-time, and second this season, between the two teams with Vermont boasting a 49-40 record in their previous matchups. The first game between the two schools came during the 1976-77 season where Vermont earned a 72-55 victory. Vermont has won four straight matchups including sweeping the season series 61-58 and 60-37 last season. Olson was a force down low averaging 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds to go with 1.0 assist across the two games last season. In their earlier matchup this season, the Catamounts defeated the Wildcats 72-55 at Patrick Gym. In that game Gilwee led the Catamounts with 14 points and hit a game-high four threes to go with two rebounds and an assist. Richason shot 5-9 from the floor with three three-pointers made on her way to 13 points as well as a game-high three blocks. Utterback finished with 10 points five assists and one block on 4-10 shooting from the field. In her last three games against the Wildcats Utterback has had her way averaging 14.0 points, 1.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists on an efficient 15-29 (51.7 percent) shooting. Richason in her last three matchups with UNH has registered 12.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.7 blocks per contest.
WHAT'S NEXT
