COACH'S QUOTE
"We are happy to get a road win and a shutout today," said head coach
Kristi Huizenga. "We moved the ball well for most of the game and executed on our opportunities around goal. Despite our defense having a pretty solid day, UMBC were able to break through a few times and Erin came up with a couple of big saves."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts created pressure throughout the first half outshooting UMBC 8-3 and constantly pressing forward on the Retrievers.
- Vermont's pressure paid off when in the 16th minute Bailey Ayer collected the ball and set up Laney Ross who sent a one-touch long ball over to Jill Brody on the wing. Brody settled the ball and sent a low cross to Doherty at the top of the box where she took a touch past her defender and fired a shot from 25 yards into the upper left corner to beat the goalkeeper and put Vermont up 1-0.
- To start the second half the Catamounts came out pressing and in the 51st minute Doherty received the ball at midfield and beat her defender before sending a through ball to Bossert who was able to corral it past her defender to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper where she buried a hard shot into the lower left corner of the net to put UVM up 2-0.
- Moments later, in the 55th minute, Bosset completed her brace connecting on her ninth goal of the season when Maddy Cronin sent in a freekick that she got her head to out leaping her defender and sent into the left side netting.
- Throughout the rest of the game the Retrievers pressed forward testing the Catamounts defense and in the 80th minute Erin Murphy made a crucial save in the box to keep the score at its final outcome of 3-0 for UVM.
