WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK
Vermont (11-9, 5-4) looks to rebound on Wednesday evening as they continue league play traveling to face NJIT (10-9, 5-3) in another crucial game in the America East standings. NJIT is tied for third place at 5-3 with Maine and the Catamounts sit a half game back. The 5 p.m. contest can be seen live on ESPN+ with Mike Ventola and Dave Calloway on the call. NJIT SPECTATOR POLICY
All spectators ages five and older, must be fully vaccinated and provide proof upon entry. Masks remain required for all non-participants. Proof of vaccination will be required for all spectators, in compliance with the City of Newark's Executive Order.
FOUR STARTERS IN DOUBLE FIGURES
Vermont's four starters who have started every game this season –
Emma Utterback (12.2 PPG),
Josie Larkins (11.7 PPG),
Delaney Richason (10.0 PPG) and
Anna Olson (11.4 PPG) are leading the Catamounts all scoring in double figures. All four of them play an average of 29.0 minutes or more per game.
LARKINS HAVING A CAREER-YEAR FROM DOWNTOWN
Larkins is second on the team in scoring this season with 11.7 points per game. She is tied for 19th in the NCAA with 53 made three-pointers this season. She is shooting 40.2 percent from downtown. She has made 213 career three-pointers which ranks second all-time at UVM. In games where Larkins hits three or more three-pointers in a game UVM is 6-2 this season.
ALL STARTS ON THE DEFENSIVE END
UVM is second in America East on the defensive end this season giving up 55.9 points per game. In the Catamounts 11 wins this year they've given up just 48.5 points per game. Vermont is also second in America East averaging 3.7 blocked shots per game. UVM forward
Anna Olson is second in the league averaging 1.3 blocks per game.
SCOUTING NJIT
The Highlanders started conference play 4-0 with upset wins over Stony Brook and Maine but NJIT is 1-3 since. In their last game, a comeback effort fell just short at UAlbany in a 57-53 Great Danes win. NJIT is fourth in the conference in scoring and scoring defense. NJIT leads America East averaging 4.3 blocks per game. NJIT blocked five UVM shots in the teams' January meeting, Kiana Brereton had three of those.
Kenna Squier leads the team in scoring with 11.2 points per game. She has been the Highlanders top-scorer in seven games this season. NJIT is 3-4 in those contests. She is fifth in the conference averaging 32.9 minutes per game.
SERIES HISTORY
Vermont leads the all-time series with the Highlanders 6-1. UVM won the first four matchups between the two teams before NJIT joined America East. Last December the Catamounts played its only true road games of the 2020-21 campaign in Newark against the Highlanders. NJIT defeated UVM 70-60 on December 27 behind a career-high 20 points from Kimi Evans. The next day UVM trounced the Highlanders 65-45 on December 28.
Earlier this season on January 19 the Catamounts defeated NJIT 71-49 at Patrick Gym. All five Vermont starters reached double figures led by sophomore forward
Anna Olson who had a game-high 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots as UVM led wire-to-wire.
CATAMOUNTS CELEBRATE NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY FEBRUARY 5
UVM will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day presented by Vermont Mutual on Saturday, February 5th during their game against UMass Lowell at 2 p.m. Girls from the local community with an interest in sports and being involved in this celebration will have the opportunity to become members of the UVM Athletic Staff for the day. Girls in grades 4-8 can apply to a wide variety of positions including: Public Address Announcer, Marketing Assistant, Ticket Staff, and many more!
