WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK
Vermont (7-6, 1-1) continues conference play tomorrow night as they travel to face Stony Brook (11-2, 2-1) in the teams' first meeting on Long Island in 735 days. FOUR STARTERS IN DOUBLE FIGURES
Vermont's four starters who have started every game this season –
Emma Utterback (10.8 PPG),
Josie Larkins (12.4 PPG),
Delaney Richason (10.5 PPG) and
Anna Olson (12.2 PPG) are leading the Catamounts all scoring in double figures. All four of them play an average of 29.5 minutes or more per game.
LARKINS LEADING AND HITTING MILESTONES
Graduate guard
Josie Larkins, who leads the Catamounts in scoring with 12.4 points per game, is making her mark in the record book this winter. Last Wednesday at New Hampshire she hit five three-pointers surpassing Lori Taylor (1994-98) for second all-time in program history with 198 made three-pointers.
She also needs just 15 points to reach 1,000 in her Catamount career. She would be the 23rd player in program history to reach 1,000 points and the first to do so since
Hanna Crymble '20 in 2018.
Larkins is 19th in the NCAA currently shooting a career-best 44.7% from behind the arc. She's made 38 three-pointers this year which is tied for 24th in the NCAA.
HISTORIC PERFORMANCE IN DURHAM
Last Wednesday the Catamounts defeated UNH 60-37 at Lundholm Gymnasium. The 23-point win at UNH is the largest in program history and marked the fourth straight time UVM has won at UNH. The 37 points UVM gave up were the fewest they have surrendered in a single game since defeating UAlbany 52-36 on February 1, 2020. Dating back to the last season four of the Catamounts last five conference games have been double digit wins.
ALL STARTS ON THE DEFENSIVE END
UVM is second in America East on the defensive end this season giving up 56.5 points per game. In the Catamounts seven wins this year they've given up just 49.1 points per game. Vermont is also third in America East averaging 3.4 blocked shots per game. UVM forward
Anna Olson is second in the league averaging 1.3 blocks per game.
LIMITING OPPONENTS TRIPS TO THE LINE
The Catamounts are averaging just 13.5 fouls-per game this season which is the 23rd fewest in the NCAA. As a team in 13 games they have committed just 176 personal fouls. UVM committed a season-low eight fouls at Navy on November 20.
SCOUTING STONY BROOK
The Catamounts will face the preseason favorite and defending tournament champions in America East on Wednesday night. The Seawolves are top-scoring team in America East averaging 69.3 points per game. Stony Brook was 9-1 over its non-conference slate earning wins against St. John's, Rutgers and Washington State. After an 11-day layoff Stony Brook was stunned 54-49 at NJIT in its America East opener on December 30. The Seawolves bounced back with a 38-point win over Hartford and an impressive 19-point win at Maine on Sunday.
When healthy all five of Stony Brook's starters are averaging more than 10 points per game. Gigi Gonzalez, Anastasia Warren and India Pagan are all averaging 12 points per game for the Seawolves. Warren led the way on Sunday at Maine with 15 points.
SERIES HISTORY
After 19 years of the Catamounts battling the Seawolves, Stony Brook holds a 21-19 edge It has been a streaky series, Vermont won eight consecutive meetings from 2008 to 2011. Stony Brook has won each of the last seven. Vermont's last win over the Seawolves was in February of 2017 on Long Island.
