Maine Outlasts Women's Basketball in the America East Quarterfinals

FINAL SCORE: No. 2 Maine 78, No. 7 Vermont 66
BANGOR, Maine – Maeve Carroll had 22 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists leading the two-seed Maine Black Bears to a 78-66 win over the seventh-seed Vermont Catamounts Wednesday night in the Hercules Tires America East Playoffs from the Cross Insurance Center. The Black Bears earned their seventh straight tournament win and will host the three-seed UMass Lowell Sunday in the semifinals.

COACH'S QUOTE
"It's always tough when a season comes to an end," said Mayer Women's Basketball Head Coach Alisa Kresge. "I'm very proud of the fight we showed in a tough environment. The growth this team has shown is exciting for the future. I couldn't be more proud of Hanna Crymble as a player, a leader and a person. She has elevated our program in every facet."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emma Utterback had nine points and two assists to lead the Catamounts out of the gate strong in the first quarter. Hanna Crymble hit a jumper with 2:23 left in the opening period to give UVM a six-point edge at 20-14. With 1:03 remaining in the quarter Maine's Maddy McVicar hit Maine's fifth three-pointer of the quarter to pull within three.
  • Maine used an 8-0 run over 63 seconds to take the lead and the momentum early in the second quarter. Josie Larkins had seven points in the quarter responding every time the Black Bears looked to extend their lead. An Anne Simon layup with 19 seconds left in the half gave Maine a four-point cushion at the break.
  • McVicar had eight points in the third quarter as the Black Bears extended their lead to 11. In 2:01 of game action the Catamounts responded with an 8-1 run behind two three-pointers from Jane McCauley and a Utterback jumper. Maine's lead stood at six entering the fourth quarter.
  • Three separate times in the final frame Vermont was able to cut the Maine lead to five but they weren't able to get any closer. Maine hit seven free throws in the final minute to close out the win and advance in the America East Playoffs.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jane McCauley scored a career-high nine points, as she hit three shots from downtown.
  • In addition to leading the team in scoring with 19 points Josie Larkins set a new career-high with nine assists. She assisted on one-third of Vermont's made field goals.
  • Carly Whiteside made her first career start in the green and gold.
  • The teams shot a combined 9-for-9 from the charity stripe in the first half, the Catamounts finished the game a perfect 8-for-8.
  • This evening was the fourth time this season Maine hit 12 or more three-pointers, they won each matchup.
  • Senior forward Hanna Crymble saw her final game action as a Catamount Wednesday. She finishes her esteemed career with 1,752 points, the sixth most in program history. She is the 20th player in America East history to reach 1,750 points.
