COACH'S QUOTE
"Proud of the way our team bounced back today," said Mayer Women's Basketball Head Coach
Alisa Kresge. "We showed a lot of heart, grit and toughness against a very good UMass Lowell team. It's nice to get two games under our belt and our first conference win of the year."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Larkins helped key a quick Catamounts start with eight points in the opening five minutes, including two from downtown. Maddy Smith completed a 5-0 UVM run to give Vermont its first lead of the weekend with 4:47 left in the opening quarter.
- Larkins and Utterback scored the final five points of the quarter to give UVM a six-point lead headed to the second frame.
- Utterback had five points early in the quarter including her first triple of the season as UVM stretched its lead to seven. The Catamounts took a six-point edge into the break.
- Anna Olson had four points early in the third quarter as Vermont established an eight-point cushion. The Catamounts would take an 49-43 advantage to the final frame.
- With 7:15 left in the game the River Hawks cut the Vermont lead to four with a 4-0 run capped by two Niya Johnson free throws. Johnson hit her fifth three-pointer of the game to cut the UVM lead to four again with 2:13 remaining.
- After two made free throws from the River Hawks the Catamounts lead was just two with 1:23 remaining. The Catamounts broke the River Hawks press on the ensuing possession and Delaney Richason found Olson alone in the frontcourt for a layup. Olson was fouled and injured on the play and Smith converted the free throw to give UVM a late five-point edge.
- Kaylen Banwareesignh converted a layup with 57 seconds left to make it a one possession game again but Larkins converted two free throws late to seal the win.
